NEWSLETTER ARCHIVE MAIN MENU

This newsletter is a monthly publication from your friends at Boomers Offshore.  It's just our way of trying to stay in touch and to encourage on-going communications between family, friends or anybody interested in our lives in Costa Rica.

Welcome To Boomers Offshore...

This issue introduces you to newest literary contributor... none other than mi esposa, Fran Browne.  Fran's first article deals openly with her concerns living her cloistered life in Costa Rica.

Also in this issue Andy delves into the mush asked topic of "What should I bring to Costa Rica?"  While purely subjective, it does give some good insight to this huge decision should you decide to move here.

Meet our latest guests, Gary and Betty from Mesa Arizona and as always another really cool recipe.  Enjoy this newest edition of the Boomers Offshore Newsletter.

MONTHLY RANT

Dealing With Abusive Forum Moderators...

When I began doing research on a possible move to Costa Rica, I relied very heavily on the internet, especially on certain types of social gathering technologies referred to as Forums.

Forums are virtual gathering places where people, with common interests, congregate (electronically) to ask questions and share information.  They occasionally become platforms for individuals to (occasionally) profess or rant about things which may be of particular interest to themselves or to the group.

What To Bring or NOT To Bring to Costa Rica...

After months (or years) of research you have finally come to the decision that Costa Rica is going to become your new home (away) from home.  Now the dilemma becomes what do you bring with you.  Maybe you want to live the minimalist lifestyle like Jerry and Nancy (see video), and travel light, bringing only what you can stuff into a couple of duffle bags.  Or, maybe you decide to bring everything you own (including the old Dodge Caravan) and cram it all into two 40 foot containers!  Whatever your choice, you will still face the dilemma of what to bring in order to start your new life in Costa Rica.

Expat Reflections: Fran's Musings...

The other night Andy and I were talking about our new lives in Costa Rica and the lives of many of our friends who have moved here.  One common thread came out as we talked and that was quite a few women, who were once strong, independent, take charge leaders back home, now appear overly dependent on their husbands for almost everything.

I was one of those women.

The Ins & Outs of House Sitting...

In the U.S., if you want to take off on vacation, all you need do is notify the Post Office to hold your mail, tell your neighbors to keep a eye on your place, and board your pooches in a safe and secure facility until you return.

Here in Costa Rica, things are just a tad different.  While crime is not staggeringly bad, there is concern you may fall victim to the casual break-in.  However, in Costa Rica, it is our responsibility to take steps to mitigate that problem.

andy's recipe of the month...

Here is another non-award winning recipe from the Costa Rican kitchen of Andy Browne

Margarita Jell-O Shots...

This will grow hair in places where the sun don't shine J

We live in the tropics where alcohol (and a few herbs) reign supreme.  Here I seize the opportunity of taking some of Natures most basic ingredients and combine them into one smoking, get yourself loaded type of party dessert.  We will be serving these Jello-O shots at our annual Halloween Party and Street Fest in Charlotte North Carolina on October 31, 2010.

Our First Trip Back To The USA in 18 months...

Expect lots of commentary and pictures of our first trip back in a year and a half.  I'm a little scared right now because all Fran and I seem to be talking about right now is FOOD!  Catching up on our old ways may not be such a good thing!
